I Quit Drinking Diet Soda for 30 Days – Here’s What Happened!

diet sodaSeveral years ago, I quit drinking diet soda (Diet Coke) for 30 days. When I tried it again later, here’s what happened:

  • I suffered brain fog symptoms with-in 15 min – I had a hard time remembering names, phone numbers, etc.
  • I developed a severe headache with-in 30 min.

Both of these symptoms lasted for an hour or more after they started!

I thought that this effect might be a fluke, so a few days later I tried it again and the same thing happened.

I’ve repeated this test several times now and get the same reaction each time. In fact, if I drink, chew or eat anything with aspartame in it (the artificial sweetener found in Diet Coke), I have the same reaction.

After sharing this story with friends of mine, several have shared similar reactions.

What’s interesting is that prior to my stopping drinking diet soda, I didn’t know that it had been affecting me. It wasn’t until I actually went on a diet of Diet Coke and started back up again that I noticed these effects.

The Problem With Diet Soda Containing Aspartame

Diet soda often uses aspartame as an artificial sweetener in place of sugar. It also goes by the brand names NutraSweet® and Equal®.

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers aspartame safe, it’s been under suspicion for years by numerous health advocates.

Aspartame is made up of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. The phenylalanine methyl bond in this mixture later forms methanol.

Once inside your body, the methanol gets converted into formaldehyde which has been linked to all kinds of health related issues in humans.

Interestingly, I experience these same brain fog and headache issues whenever I drink or eat anything made with just phenylalanine additive as well.

Brain Health Issues of Artificially Sweetened Drinks

A recent study was performed to test the effects of artificially sweetened drinks like diet soda upon stroke and dementia.

What did they find?

  • Artificially sweetened drink consumption such as diet soda was associated with a higher risk of stroke and dementia.
  • Those who drank one artificially sweetened drink a day were ~3X more likely to become diagnosed with dementia and stroke!


When I went on a diet of Diet Coke I discovered that aspartame and phenylalanine additives gave me brain fog and bad headaches within 15 min of consumption. In fact, anything that contains these chemicals, even sugarless chewing gum, has the same negative effect on my brain.

Recent studies have shown that drinking artificially sweetened drinks like diet soda can lead to a 3X higher risk of developing dementia and stroke.

My recommendation, stay away from these chemical cocktails and avoid artificially sweetened drinks and foods altogether.

  1. Thank you for sharing your observations Gary. I’ve always been wary of diet sodas for a variety of reasons and here’s another good one.

    While sugar gets a bad rap these days, I’ll take it over manufactured chemicals any day.

  2. I’ve seen many fitness professionals drinking Diet Coke as a way how to battle hunger and sweets cravings. Their clients often pick this habit as well. They complain about concentration issues, but it is usually contributed to food deprivation due to a strict diet. Maybe it’s wrong, maybe the diet soda is the real cause. Especially if they drink a lot.

    1. Thanks for commenting, Iva! I know for me, a couple of sips of Diet Soda and within 15 min boom, brain fog and subsequent headache! I am sure not everyone has this same reaction, but I sure do and others I know as well. Everyone is different, but there is alarming scientific data against artificial sweeteners.
