A Very Cool Brain Game – The Stroop Effect Test

The Stroop Effect test is a cool brain teaser which exercises your brain. To play the game, you start by pronouncing the color of the following words. Don’t read the words, just pronounce the colors of the words.

Green Red Blue
Purple Blue Purple

Easy enough, right? Now, do the same for this second group of words. Again, don’t read the words, just pronounce the color of the words.

Blue Purple Red
Green Purple Green

Ahh… That time is was a little more difficult wasn’t it? It took you a little more time to go through the list of words. The reason is that the color of the second group of words does not match the actual word itself. This causes a delay in the time it takes to name the color of the words in the second group. This is called the Stroop Effect.

The Stroop Effect test exercises the portion of the brain which is considered to be responsible for higher order executive functions (frontal lobe). The Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! software program for the Nintendo DS contains an automated Stroop Test built into it.

Check out the YouTube video below based on the Stroop Effect test.

The link below takes you to an interactive version of the Stroop Task game. It’s difficulty increases as you get better. It’s a blast to play!

How to Supercharge Your Brain

I read a blog post the other day on Shine from Yahoo that listed 12 ways to supercharge your brain. Many of the things listed I already knew, like exercising your mind (ie. playing online brain games), getting enough sleep, eating right and taking B vitamins.  But some of the things listed I hadn’t heard of before. For example, I didn’t know that whole wheat bread contained lecithin, which helps brain function. And I didn’t know that drinking apple juice increases the production of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.  If you’re interested in reading more about the 12 ways to supercharge your brain, click here to read the original post.

And don’t forget, playing online brain games is one way you can supercharge your brain. So head on over to our Free Brain Games link by clicking here.

Five Ways to Keep Alzheimers Away

CNN wrote an article on 5 ways to keep alzheimers away. One of those 5 ways was cross training your brain through brain games. “Our brains can be made stronger through exercise,” says Andrew Carle, assistant professor of in the department of health administration and policy at George Mason University. “In the same way physical exercise can delay many of the effects of aging on the body, there’s some evidence cognitive exercise can at least delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.” He went on to say in the article that “Doing a crossword puzzle every day is good, but it’s the equivalent of doing only pushups — your arms will get strong, but not the rest of your body.” He recommends doing other challenging mental activities in addition.

Here on the Online Brain Games Blog we have a variety of free online brain games to keep your brain active and challenged. The key to keeping your brain fit and growing new brain cells is to be continually challenging your brain. Advancing to a new level in a brain game, learning a new game or developing new strategies, learning a new language, or picking up a new hobby. These are all ways we can keep our brains challenged which helps it to grow and stay healthy.
