The fitness industry has been up till now pretty much focused on our bodies and our outward appearance. There are books upon books, videos upon videos, all devoted to beefing up our bodies, flattening our bellies and tightening our gluts. But our brains are housed inside our bodies. Not only that, our brains control the functioning of our bodies. Without our brain, we cannot live. So it stands to reason that we should not only be focusing on our bodies fitness, but our brains fitness as well.

I know, you’re saying that our brains are part of our bodies and our brains benefit by exercising our bodies. Tis true.. and physical exercise is in fact one way we can beef up our brain. But there are some additional things we can do to specifically beef up our brain.

According to Dr. Michael Mega, M.D. Ph.D from the Providence Brain Institute, the top 5 things we can do to specifically beef up our brain are:

  • Eating specific foods good for your brain
  • Exercising regularly
  • Continually learning and staying mentally challenged
  • Being socially engaged via relationships and/or community involvement
  • Making sure to get adequate sleep

The video below discuss these 5 items in more detail. In the video, Dr. Mega discusses a startling statistic about our probabilities of having some form of dementia in old age and what we can do NOW to prevent it. Take some time to check this important video out. because your brain might depend on it!

  1. Why do you think that being socially engaged via relationships and/or community involvement is good – do you think that it’s just the fact that it doesn’t get to depressed?

  2. Great question! According to Dr. Mega in the video, being socially engaged via relationships and/or community involvement helps to provide a means and/or outlet for stress reduction. You can talk things over, vent, share, etc. In addition, social interaction involves a lot of senses and high level skills that have been developed over time. This helps to keep your brain active and challenged.
