In this day in age of extremely polarized politics and World turmoil combined with the financial meltdown we’re all currently experiencing, finding a way to deal with stress becomes all the more important. I recently came across a great article in the Vancouver Sun regarding mental exercise, specifically meditation, and the positive impact it can have on our brains with respect to dealing with stress.

The author of this article, Denise Ryan, stated the following:

Richard Davidson, one of the world’s top brain scientists, believes that mental exercise, specifically meditation, can literally change our minds.

“Our data shows mental practice can induce long-lasting changes in the brain,” said Davidson, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

We can become more self-aware, better at handling distressing emotions, and more empathetic, a combination that creates greater social effectiveness.

Because our brains are plastic ( neuroplastic ) throughout our lives, we can literally change the wiring of our brains, regardless of age. To evoke such changes however, it requires mental exercise and regular practice.

  4. The effect could have been a result of a placebo effect. But that in itself would be quite an interesting finding–that an executive control function like working memory could be strengthened by the placebo effect despite the rigors of pre-deployment training.

  5. I am doing a mental exercise/mental diet that I came across in one of Tony Robbin’s books. I have not been successful completely but I feel the exercise itself has been a great benefit. I am able to to stay calm in negative situations and to even consider that there may be a benefit.

  6. There are indeed a lot of problems around the world right now, no wonder a lot of people are stressed out thinking about what will happen in the nearest future. Doing mental exercises with your brain should help I think as well as getting enough sleep.

  7. I’ve come to the conclusion that any sort of brain activity has an effect on the way your brain functions later on in life — for better or for worse. It’s especially important to realize that stress alters the way your mind functions. Educational establishments will help you to learn new things, but they also cause a tremendous amount of pressure. That extra stress can lead to aneurysms or even the on-set of Alzheimer’s disease. The exercises you recommend are great because they’re non-stress inducing but they keep your brain very active.
