Physical Exercise Can Reverse Brain Decline

The following article By Steven Reinberg appeared in healthfinder.gov website.

Exercise Keeps the Brain Young - Experiments in mice find running increases production of neural stem cells…

The key points I take away from this article are:

  • Exercise appears to reverse the decline in the production of brain stem cells usually associated with aging.
  • Exercise has the ability to restore a neurochemical essential for the production of new brain cells.
  • Moderate running can improve the production, survival and growth of new neurons in the brain.
  • The production of neural stem cells in the hippocampus decreases dramatically by middle age, and moderate running exercise can slow this trend.
  • Exercise can maintain health and proper health of our brain.

Can Going Veggie Shrink Your Brain

According to the results from a University of Oxford study, going on a total veggie diet might make you six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage. The reason is the lack of B12 found in meat, milk and fish. B12 deficiency can also cause anemia and inflammation of the nervous system.

For the study, 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87 underwent brain scans, memory testing and physical exams. The researchers from the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA) also collected blood samples to check vitamin B12 levels. Brain scans and memory tests were also performed again five years later.

The study, published in the journal Neurology, found that people who had higher vitamin B12 levels were six times less likely to experience brain shrinkage compared with those who had lower levels of the vitamin in their blood. None of the people in the study had vitamin B12 deficiency.

How to Supercharge Your Brain

I read a blog post the other day on Shine from Yahoo that listed 12 ways to supercharge your brain. Many of the things listed I already knew, like exercising your mind (ie. playing online brain games), getting enough sleep, eating right and taking B vitamins.  But some of the things listed I hadn’t heard of before. For example, I didn’t know that whole wheat bread contained lecithin, which helps brain function. And I didn’t know that drinking apple juice increases the production of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.  If you’re interested in reading more about the 12 ways to supercharge your brain, click here to read the original post.

And don’t forget, playing online brain games is one way you can supercharge your brain. So head on over to our Free Brain Games link by clicking here.
